Introduction: The Question of Shame<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the deepest and most universal human experiences is not merely guilt\u2014but shame. Guilt whispers, \u201cYou did something wrong.\u201d Shame declares, \u201cSomething is wrong with you<\/em>.\u201d It is the feeling that makes us want to hide, to cover, to disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet Scripture opens with a stunning revelation: humanity was originally created naked and unashamed<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This tells us something profound: shame is not part of God\u2019s original design. It entered the human story through disobedience\u2014and God\u2019s redemptive plan is not only about forgiving sins, but about removing shame and restoring us to a place of holy confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this message, we will walk through the biblical narrative to trace the origin of shame, God\u2019s immediate response, how Christ bore our shame fully, and how we are now clothed again in glory\u2014not with temporary coverings, but with the very righteousness of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I. Naked But Clothed In Glory (Genesis 2:25)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey were naked\u2026 and were not ashamed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adam and Eve stood physically exposed, yet spiritually adorned. They were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Clothed in innocence<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Clothed in righteousness<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Clothed in the manifest presence and glory of God<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    There was no fear, no hiding, no self-consciousness. Why? Because holiness produces confidence, not shame. Their nakedness was not a problem\u2014their purity was their covering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    👉 Here is the first kingdom principle: Shame is not caused by exposure; it is caused by lost holiness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    II.<\/strong> The Birth Of Shame (Genesis 3:10)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cI was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Notice what didn\u2019t<\/em> change: God did not change. Their physical bodies did not change. What changed was their condition<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sin produced:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Fear<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Awareness of nakedness<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The instinct to hide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Shame is the inward evidence that something sacred has been broken. Humanity\u2019s first attempt at a solution? Fig leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Fig leaves represent self-righteousness\u2014our futile attempts to cover our own flaws, to fix ourselves, to hide our failures. But fig leaves wither. They cannot survive the gaze of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      III. God’s Temporary Covering (Genesis 3:21)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cThe LORD God made coats of skins and clothed them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This is one of the most grace-filled verses in Genesis. God did not leave them in their inadequate coverings. He Himself provided a covering\u2014but it came at a cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Key truths:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • God initiated the covering<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Blood was shed<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • An innocent life died<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Nakedness was covered<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Yet this covering, while an act of profound mercy, was temporary. Animal skins could cover nakedness, but they could not remove sin. They were a picture, a prophecy\u2014pointing forward to a perfect and permanent solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        IV. The Tree And The Cross.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Redemption\u2019s story is framed by two trees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        1. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. The tree of Calvary\u2014the cross of Christ<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          The first tree brought sin, shame, and separation.
          The second tree brought redemption, restoration, and reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Scripture declares,\u00a0\u201cCursed is everyone who hangs on a tree\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Galatians 3:13). Christ became the curse so we could be freed from it. He entered the realm of our shame so we could enter the realm of His glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          V. Christ Bears Our Shame (John 19:23\u201324)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          \u201cThe coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          On the cross, Jesus was stripped naked\u2014a deliberate, brutal humiliation. Why? Because shame must be fully exposed and absorbed to be destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The seamless garment is rich with meaning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \n
          • Woven from top to bottom \u2192 righteousness that comes from above<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • No seams \u2192 no flaw, no division, no sin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            While soldiers gambled for His garment, Jesus bore our shame in His nakedness. This is the divine exchange:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • Our sin laid on Him<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Our shame borne by Him<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • His righteousness given to us<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • His glory now our covering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              VI. Clothed Again In Glory<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

              The New Testament rings with this truth: \u201cAs many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ\u201d<\/em> (Galatians 3:27).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Salvation is more than forgiveness\u2014it is re-clothing. We move:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • From fig leaves (self-righteousness)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • To animal skins (temporary covering)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • To Christ Himself (permanent righteousness)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                Hebrews 12:2 reveals that Jesus \u201cendured the cross, despising the shame.\u201d<\/em> He did not merely endure physical pain\u2014He endured the full weight of our shame so we would never have to live under its dominion again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Conclusion: No More Hiding<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                In Eden, humanity hid from God.
                At the cross, God exposed Himself for humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Adam hid because he was naked.
                Jesus was made naked so we could stop hiding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                If you are in Christ, hear this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                • You are not naked before God<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • You are not exposed in your failure<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • You are clothed in the righteousness of Christ<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • You are wrapped in the glory of the Son<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  \u201cInstead of your shame you shall have double honor\u201d<\/em> (Isaiah 61:7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Final Declaration <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  I am no longer clothed in shame.
                  I am clothed in Christ.
                  My sin was carried.
                  My shame was borne.
                  And His glory is now my covering.
