Jesus’ statement, “Go and tell that fox…” is found in Luke 13:31–33.
Some Pharisees warned Jesus that Herod Antipas wanted to kill Him. Jesus replied:
“Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish My work.'”
Brief Exegesis
The term “fox” was not simply an insult. In Jewish culture, a fox symbolized cunning, deceit, craftiness, and insignificance compared with a lion.
By calling Herod a fox, Jesus exposed his manipulative nature while showing that Herod’s political power could not stop God’s divine purpose.
Jesus refused to be intimidated. Instead of fleeing, He declared that He would continue preaching, healing, and delivering people until His mission was complete.
His timetable was determined by the Father, not by threats from earthly rulers.
The expression “today, tomorrow, and the third day” points to the certainty and completion of His mission. It emphasizes that God’s plan would reach its appointed fulfillment.
Lessons for Today:
1. Do not be intimidated by the threats of “foxes.”
People may scheme against you, but they cannot cancel God’s purpose for your life.
2. Stay focused on your assignment
Jesus did not waste time arguing with Herod; He remained committed to His mission.
3. God’s timing is greater than human opposition.
No enemy can end your assignment before God’s appointed time.
4. Discern the spirit behind opposition.
Not every attack is a lion’s roar; some come through subtle manipulation and deception.
5. Kingdom purpose is stronger than political or worldly power.
Jesus demonstrated that obedience to God is greater than fear of human authority.
Prophetic Reflection
When God has assigned you a purpose, do not allow the “foxes” of fear, intimidation, gossip, or manipulation to divert you.
Continue the work God has entrusted to you. Those who walk in God’s will are preserved until their assignment is fulfilled.
As Jesus declared His mission with confidence, may you also walk boldly, knowing that God’s purpose for your life cannot be frustrated by the schemes of men in Jesus name. Amen.
